Fiberglass Boat Repair in San Diego: What to Expect
Cracks, blisters, and impact damage are common on San Diego boats. Here is what the repair process looks like and what it costs.
San Diego's saltwater environment is beautiful, but it is hard on fiberglass hulls. UV exposure, dock rash, and the occasional impact all leave their mark. The good news: most fiberglass damage is fully repairable, and a quality repair is nearly invisible when done right.
Common Types of Fiberglass Damage
Stress cracks are the most frequent issue we see. They radiate outward from a point of impact or flex stress — often around cleats, hatches, and the bow. Left alone, they allow water intrusion and grow worse.
Osmotic blisters form when water migrates through the gelcoat and reacts with the laminate. They look like bubbles on the hull below the waterline and require grinding out, drying, and re-laminating.
Impact damage — from dock strikes, debris, or collisions — can range from a surface gouge to a full structural breach. The repair approach depends on how deep the damage goes.
The Repair Process
- Assessment — We inspect the damage, probe for delamination, and determine whether it is cosmetic or structural.
- Grind and prep — Damaged material is ground back to clean, sound laminate. This is the most important step; shortcuts here cause failures later.
- Laminate repair — For structural damage, we lay up new fiberglass cloth and resin in stages, matching the original thickness.
- Filler and fairing — We build the surface back up with marine-grade filler, block-sanding to a fair, smooth profile.
- Gelcoat application — Color-matched gelcoat is sprayed or applied, then wet-sanded and polished to blend with the surrounding surface.
A well-executed repair is indistinguishable from the original hull.
What Does It Cost?
Fiberglass and gelcoat repair in San Diego typically runs $120–$180 per hour for labor. Most cosmetic repairs — a stress crack or small gouge — take 2–4 hours. Larger structural repairs or osmotic blister work can run significantly more depending on the extent of damage.
